For the past 80 years, cardiovascular disease has been the leading cause of death in the United States. Primary recommendations for improving heart disease risk factors often begin with dietary changes – to include plenty of fruits and vegetables as part of a heart-healthy diet and to replace saturated fats with unsaturated fats. While technically a fruit, the avocado is also a source of unsaturated fat and, even though the research suggests the benefits of including unsaturated fats in the diet for heart health, many consumers are still confused about the difference between the types of dietary fat and where avocados can be included in the good fat–heart health equation.
