About SD-USA

Sports Dietetics-USA (SD-USA) is a sub-unit of SCAN that focuses on sports nutrition issues, educating sports dietetics professionals, and advancing sports dietetics as a career specialty.

Statement of Purpose:

Sports Dietetics-USA is dedicated to promoting nutrition practices that enhance lifelong health, fitness, and sports performance; and advancing the vocation of sports dietetics. Sports Dietetics-USA members are the source of sports nutrition information and services, empowering individuals to achieve optimal health and performance.


  • Apply the science of sports nutrition to fuel fitness and performance
  • Provide guidance in safe and effective sports nutrition practices
  • Provide opportunities for education and professional growth of members 
    (workshops, presentations, e-learning)
  • Provide technical assistance to the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) for the Board Certification as a Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) credential. A Sports Dietetics Specialty Examination Workgroup (SSEW), composed of SCAN members, participates in the following:
    • Develop items for the CSSD specialty examination
    • Recommend sports nutrition references for CDR's sports nutrition reference list
    • Recommend sports dietitians to serve on the SSEW
    • Assist CDR in promoting the CSSD credential
  • Maintain and expand the SD-USA subunit
    • Recruit and retain members
    • Maintain a member database
    • Enlist member volunteers for SD-USA activities
    • Communicate with members via listserv, Web site, SD-USA Score e-newsletter, and SCAN'S PULSEnewsletter
  • Maintain sports nutrition offerings on SCAN’s Web site
    • Sports Nutrition Fact Sheets
    • "Sports RDs in the News"
    • Sports Nutrition Career Tip Sheet
    • Sports nutrition education programs (sports nutrition courses/programs)
    • Sports nutrition books and resources (public and professional)
    • Student Corner that highlights student accomplishments
  • Educate sports RDs regarding the ADA Standards of Practice and Standards of Professional Performance for Registered Dietitians in Sports Dietetics
  • Communicate with academic institutions offering sports nutrition courses/programs
    • Update program directors regarding sports nutrition education and the CSSD credential
    • Invite student participation in SCAN’s Student Corner
  • Network with sports medicine, sports nutrition, and sports organizations on a national and international level, and with the food and fitness industries
  • Build sponsorships and partnerships
