About Sports Performance
Sports Performance is a sub-unit of SCAN that focuses on sports performance issues, educating sports dietetics professionals, and advancing sports dietetics as a career specialty.
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:
Sports Performance is dedicated to promoting nutrition practices that enhance lifelong health, fitness, and sports performance; and advancing the vocation of sports dietetics. Sports Performance members are the source of sports performance information and services, empowering individuals to achieve optimal health and performance.
GOALS:
- Apply the science of sports nutrition to fuel fitness and performance
- Provide guidance in safe and effective sports performance practices
- Provide opportunities for education and professional growth of members
(workshops, presentations, e-learning)
- Provide technical assistance to the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) for the Board Certification as a Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) credential. A Sports Dietetics Specialty Examination Workgroup (SSEW), composed of SCAN members, participates in the following:
- Develop items for the CSSD specialty examination
- Recommend sports performance references for CDR's sports nutrition reference list
- Recommend sports dietitians to serve on the SSEW
- Assist CDR in promoting the CSSD credential
- Maintain and expand the Sports Performance subunit
- Recruit and retain members
- Engage member volunteers in Sports Performance activities and projects
- Communicate with members via electronic mailing list (EML), the website, social media, the Connections newsletter, the PULSE (peer-reviewed newsletter), and the Beat (student newsletter)
- Maintain a member database
- Maintain sports performance offerings on SCAN’s website
- Sports Performance Fact Sheets
- "Sports RDs in the News"
- Sports performance education programs (sports performance courses/programs)
- Sports performance books and resources (public and professional)
- Student Corner that highlights student accomplishments
- Educate sports RDs regarding the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Standards of Practice and Standards of Professional Performance for Registered Dietitians in Sports Dietetics
- Communicate with academic institutions offering sports performance courses/programs
- Update program directors regarding sports performance education and the CSSD credential
- Invite student participation in SCAN’s Student Corner
- Network with sports medicine, sports performance, and sports organizations on a national and international level, and with the food and fitness industries
- Build sponsorship and partnerships
