2021 SCAN Virtual Poster Session Submission Application Is Now Open!

SCAN is looking for experts in subject matters related to the SCAN mission to present at the 2021 SCAN Virtual Symposium.
SCAN encourages all professionals, researchers, and students to submit an abstract and application to participate in the virtual Poster Presentation Session. 

All applicants must use the online application to submit their abstracts.
The submission deadline has been extended! Applications are due by 5:00 pm (CST) on January 22nd, 2021.
Submissions will be considered using a peer-reviewed process. 
Lead authors will be notified via email by February 1, 2021 if selected to present.

All posters presented during the virtual Poster Presentation Session will be evaluated by a peer-reviewed process, and a winner will be selected for the most outstanding poster in each of three categories:
Graduate Student
Undergraduate Student

Winners will be announced at the 2021 SCAN Virtual Symposium, and a cash prize of $250 will be awarded to the lead author of the most outstanding poster in each category! The lead author of winning posters will also receive reimbursement for their registration fee to the 2021 SCAN Virtual Symposium.*

* The lead author of any accepted student submissions will be reimbursed for their registration cost to attend the 2021 virtual SCAN Symposium. All authors are encouraged to register early to take advantage of early discounted pricing.


Abstracts must conform to one of the following categories:
  1. Research abstracts contain a brief description of author’s original research, methodology, major findings, and conclusions or implications for practice.
  2. Project or program report abstracts contain information about the purpose of the project or program; the theory or previous research upon which it is based; the unique characteristics of the project or program; the characteristics of the subjects or target audience involved and the type of evaluation for the project or program.
  3. Excellence in practice tools and strategies abstracts contain a description of the author’s innovative practice tools or strategies, methodology, targeted audience, an explanation of application in practice, and evaluation outcomes, if available.
    Student submissions must also include a letter from the faculty advisor approving the abstract for consideration and containing the advisor’s email address.


    1. Title: Use SOLID CAPITAL LETTERS and limit to 25 words
    2. Authors: Use upper and lower case type
      • For names:  First Name, Middle Initial (optional), Last Name, Credentials separated by commas.  Separate multiple authors by semi-colons.  Use an asterisk (*) immediately prior to the first name of any authors who are SCAN members.
      • For affiliations: Department or Service Name, Institution, City, State (use 2 letter abbreviation only).  If all authors are affiliated with the same institution, list the affiliation information ONCE only, following the last author’s name.
    3. Learning Outcome: List at least one (i.e., “Participants will …)
    4. Abstract: Must not exceed 300 words

    File Upload Formatting:
    • Abstracts
      • Files may be uploaded as Word documents only – No PDFs
      • The name of the file should read: Last Name of Submitter – SCAN Poster Session
    • Faculty Letters
      • Files may be uploaded in any common file format
      • The name of the file should read: Last Name of Student – Faculty Letter


    Lead authors for the Poster will be notified by February 1, 2021 if selected to present. Each lead author will present the Poster Presentation for 2-3 minutes during the Symposium on the virtual platform at a designated time. Symposium attendees will also be able to view the poster for the duration of the Symposium and ask questions.

    Poster Presenters will be provided more details about the virtual experience upon selection.

    • For publishing purposes, the poster upload must be a PDF file at the highest resolution possible.
    • The aspect ratio (ratio of width to height) should ideally be set to '16:9'
    • The complete poster is limited to one slide only. That means one single page for your PDF file.
    • Fonts should be sans-serif (e.g., Arial, Calibri, etc.)
    • Minimum font size should not be smaller than 6 pt.
    • Your poster should highlight the important parts of your study. It does not need to include every detail of the study or the complete abstract text, but rather should serve as a visual aid to effectively communicate your work to others (use charts, graphs, illustrations, and/or photographs as appropriate).
    • Make sure to proofread and share your poster with colleagues for feedback before submitting your final PDF.
