SCAN Awards & Nominations

SCAN recognizes the outstanding practice and significant contributions its members make toward promotion of SCAN’s work as an organization, and in the practice- areas represented by SCAN.

The following awards and grants are being recognized at the
2021 SCAN Virtual Symposium.

Achievement Award

This award recognizes a practitioner who has left a legacy to SCAN and the profession through both a history of leadership within SCAN and through outstanding service to the profession.

Award Recognition and Benefits:

This award is recognized every year (annually) and the winner is announced during the annual spring symposium. 

  • (1) $200 honorarium
  • Complimentary SCAN Symposium registration

Excellence in Practice Award

Each year SCAN recognizes the outstanding practice of a SCAN member in one of SCAN’s three practice areas (Cardiovascular Health, Wellness and Wellbeing, and Sports Performance). The practice area in which the award is given rotates each year based on the nominated candidates. A member may receive the award for efforts as an individual, part of a group, or part of an organization. Practice may include clinical practice, public health practice, consulting/corporate practice, program development, research, publication, education, or volunteer practice.

Award Recognition and Benefits:

This award is recognized every year (annually) and the winner is announced during the annual spring symposium.

  • (1) $200 honorarium
  • Complimentary 2020 SCAN Symposium registration
  • Recognition on SCAN Website and social media platforms

Distinguished Scholar Award

This award recognizes an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to research or the practice of dietetics as a result of continued commitment to scholarship.

This is not open for application every year, but is available if the nominating committee deems an appropriate individual(s) for recognition.

This award is announced during the annual spring symposium unless no candidate is nominated or meets the award criteria in a given year.

  • (1) $200 honorarium

Student Award

This award recognizes a student member who has unmistakable commitment to at least one of SCAN’s practice areas (nutrition for cardiovascular disease, wellness and weight management, disordered eating and eating disorders, or sports and physical performance), as evidenced by outstanding contribution to SCAN, extraordinary community service, and academic excellence.

This award is recognized every year (annually) and the winner is announced during the annual spring symposium unless no candidate is nominated or meets the award criteria in a given year.

Graduate Student Research Grant

Designed to support the research efforts of SCAN members pursuing graduate studies or dietetics education requirements, the SCAN Graduate Student Research Grant Program provides funds for research in SCAN practice areas and encourages graduate student involvement in the SCAN Symposium and other SCAN-related activities.  

Grant Recognition and Benefits:

This grant is recognized every other year (in odd numbered years) and the winners are announced during the annual spring symposium unless no candidates are nominated or meets the grant criteria in a given year.

  • (1) $2500 to be used for direct research costs
  • Complimentary SCAN Symposium registration
  • If the recipient elects to present his/her research as an oral or poster presentation at a future SCAN Symposium, complimentary Symposium registration will again be awarded if within two years of the original grant award

Practitioner Research Grant

The Practitioner Research Grant provides funds to defray research study expenses such as study supplies, laboratory fees, equipment, and participant remuneration. Funds may not be used to support salaries, stipends, and consultant fees, institutional administrative or overhead costs.

This grant supports the research endeavors of SCAN members who are currently pursuing research in sports dietetics. This grant also encourages SCAN member involvement in the SCAN Symposium and other SCAN activities.

 Recipients will disseminate their research findings to the larger SCAN membership. This may be achieved through a poster presentation at SCAN’s Symposium, submission of a research article to SCAN’s Pulse, or submission to a peer-reviewed scientific journal.

Grant Recognition and Benefits:

This grant is awarded bi-annually (in even years, after 2021 when it will also be awarded) and the winners are announced during the annual spring symposium unless no candidates are nominated or meets the grant criteria in a given year.

  • (2) $4000 awards to be used for direct research costs Complimentary SCAN Symposium registration
  • Recognition on SCAN Website and social media platforms
  • Complimentary registration to the annual SCAN Symposium for the membership year in which the grant is received
  • If the recipient elects to present his/her research as an oral or poster presentation at a future SCAN Symposium, complimentary Symposium registration will again be awarded if within two years of the original grant award
