Unscrambling the Dietary Cholesterol Confusion

Speaker: Kevin C. Maki, PhD, CLS

Despite decades of research, the associations between dietary cholesterol consumption and risks for cardiovascular disease and mortality remain controversial. Adding to this controversy are the confusing recommendations in the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The Guidelines state that cholesterol is not a nutrient of concern for overconsumption, but also recommend that individuals should consume as little dietary cholesterol as possible while following a healthy eating pattern.

2019 ACC/AHA Guideline on the Primary Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease: Part 1, Lifestyle and Behavioral Factors – An Important Role for Registered Dietitians and Nutritionists

Speaker: Penny Kris-Etherton, PhD, RDN, FNLA

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death globally. In the U.S. approximately 1 in 3 deaths are due to CVD. From about 1900 until 2010, the total number of Americans dying from CVD decreased. From 2011 to 2014, deaths from CVD increased. More recent evidence has shown that Americans are dying of heart disease and stroke at rising rates in middle age (45-64 years) mainly due to increases in risk factors (overweight/obesity, high blood pressure, glucose and lipids) that are affected by poor lifestyle habits (eg, diet).

The 2019 ACC/AHA Guideline on the Primary Prevention of CVD: Part 1, Lifestyle and Behavioral Factors incorporates existing guidelines, statements and consensus reports into a comprehensive resource for patients, health care professionals and public health officials. The report makes recommendations for the prevention of CVD with healthy lifestyle behaviors (nutrition, physical activity, weight management and tobacco use) and treatment factors (eg, risk assessment, blood pressure, blood cholesterol, diabetes and aspirin use). This webinar will describe the recommendations for lifestyle and behavioral factors. The level of evidence for all recommendations will be presented.
