Session 1
Title: 
Beyond Protein: The Evolving Role of Carbs in Sports Nutrition 
Presenter: Janet Rankin, Virginia Tech
Time: 12:45 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. 

  • Abstract: Protein is often the most discussed nutrient in sports nutrition; however, carbohydrates are equally important. This session will discuss the latest research on carbohydrate’s role in sports nutrition and provide recommendations on how to design nutrition plans for athletes that include exercise-specific recommendations for carbohydrates.
  • Learning Objectives:
    • Design nutrition plans for that include exercise-specific recommendations for carbohydrates for individuals and/or groups.
    • Identify special issues related to carbohydrates that athletes commonly face, including not getting enough, GI distress, etc.

Session 2
Title: Return to Play: Nutrition for Injury Recovery 
Presenter: Brett Singer, IRONMAN Memorial Hermann
Time: 1:30 p.m. - 2:15 p.m.

  • Abstract: It is easy for athletes to become discouraged during the long journey back to the field after an injury; however, nutrition must remain a priority. This session will discuss the latest research and nutritional strategies n to implement during this period to ensure athletes return to play in a timely and safe manner.
  • Learning Objectives:
    • Identify both macro and micro nutrients that are essential to aid in recovery.
    • Design nutrition plans for individuals and/or groups for recovery from sports injuries or overtraining.

Session 3
Title: Kitchen to the Court: Managing Fueling Stations on the Road
Presenter: Scott Sehnert, Dallas Cowboys
Time: 2:15 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

  • Abstract: Given many athletes’ travel schedules, effectively managing nutrition and fueling stations while athletes are on the road is vital for their success. This session will provide specifics on how to coordinate food production and distribution of training tables, and how to coordinate nutrition through catering when athletes are not at your training center.
  • Learning Objectives:
    • Coordinate nutrition for domestic travel for individuals and teams.
    • Coordinate food production and distribution such as developing and managing training table menus and catering.
