The SCAN Credo

As a dietetic practice group of the American Dietetic Association, SCAN is dedicated to sports, cardiovascular, and wellness nutrition, and the prevention and treatment of disordered eating. We hold to a set of essential beliefs that forms the basis for all we do, the principles we represent, our mission, and our vision. As such, we have a responsibility to:

Those Seeking Information

Our role is to educate the public on how sound nutrition practices can nourish the body and reduce the risks and impact of disease. We do this first by doing no harm. Then, we provide sound, evidence-based information to athletes, consumers, health and fitness professionals, and members of the food and nutrition industries, the media, and regulatory agencies. In doing so we recognize these constituents come from diverse backgrounds and we tailor our services accordingly.

SCAN Members Seeking Community

Our members are our greatest resource and we embrace our diversity. Our role is to provide members with strong leadership and collaboration around a "food first" approach for achieving peak performance and wellness. In doing so, we recognize them as pre-eminent authorities in sports, cardiovascular and wellness nutrition and in the treatment and prevention of disordered eating and provide prompt and courteous support. We seek opportunities for research, innovations, and professional growth. We provide members with timely access to up-to-date information on practice guidelines and new developments and provide a forum for the professional interchange of ideas in a collegial and safe environment. We provide leadership development, opportunities to serve, and professional recognition.

Health Care and Industry Seeking Partners

Our role is to collaborate with those who share our commitment to educating the public in using the best science and healthful eating practices to make sound nutrition choices. Using our collective resources we empower people to take charge of their health to reduce the risks of preventable illness and maximize performance. In doing so, we maintain the highest standards of ethical behavior as set forth by the American Dietetic Association.
